At Ultra Precision Machining, we take the precision part of our name seriously as a machine shop with CMM inspection capabilities. These computer-controlled machines can offer a pinpoint examination of the geometrical characteristics of objects. With our advanced machines, we can capture valuable data points and ensure that all machined parts and objects meet our customers’ exact specifications even if they have complex and abnormal geometries. By offering a singular solution for machining and quality assurance, Ultra Precision Machining presents numerous benefits for our customers. Take a closer look at how our CMM inspection capabilities augment our services.

How Our CMM Capabilities Enhance Machining Quality

CMM or coordinate measuring machines work by capturing data points from the surface of an object. They then take these data points and create a spatial map of the object known as a point cloud. With this level of precision, coordinate measuring machines create a computerized image of the object that can then be further examined for dimensional precision and accuracy. At Ultra Precision Machining, we utilize a Hexagon Global 5.5.5 automated probe CMM and Micro-Vu Vertex 251 and Vertex 451 automated vision-based machines.

These modern and advanced coordinate measuring machines use a probe along a machined object’s surface. This probe moves on three cartesian axes to measure the object in three dimensions. Through these measurements, the system can compare the point cloud against specified dimensions to see if it’s an exact match. The CMM inspection process is carried out in three steps to ensure the dimensional accuracy of any machined part or component. These steps are preparation, inspection, and post-inspection analysis.

Inspection Preparation

Before Ultra Precision Machining conducts an inspection, we have to complete the necessary preparations. This means programming the coordinate measuring machines with the specific dimensions that we are measuring for along with any relevant features of the part such as complex angles. Then, we have to select which probe will be appropriate for the inspection. For example, an articulating arm probe may be the best fit for parts that have complex geometries while a horizontal arm is better suited for large objects like aerospace body components.

CMM Accuracy in Part Inspection

To run the inspection, we set up the machine to carry out its preprogrammed instructions. As its probe takes readings of the object, it compares those readings to the part specifications stored in its memory. Each data point it reads is collected and stored for later analysis to allow for easy reference at any time. This is especially important for highly complex and tight-tolerance components such as what’s needed for the aerospace industry.

Post-Inspection Analysis

Once the inspection is complete, the collected data points are analyzed to determine if the part matches the requested specifications. This specifically means that the data points are measured against inputted tolerances or 3D CAD models. Then, a report is generated and stored for record-keeping purposes. Using this information, our machinist can confirm that a part is dimensionally exact or rework it until it is based on the data. Additionally, maintaining these records is an essential part of maintaining ISO and AS9100 certifications.  It is common for customers to request these reports to verify each batch or individual component.

Benefits of Working With a Machine Shop with CMM Inspection Capabilities

Across numerous industries, quality control and standardized procedures are only getting more strict or regulated, so post-machining CMM inspections are quickly becoming a necessity. Since Ultra Precision can offer CMM inspections right alongside our machining services, you can meet this growing need for precision easily from a singular, convenient, and reliable source.

As manufacturing for specialty industries becomes more complex, the need to ensure the quality of complex parts is becoming more commonplace. Since the CMM stores data points and comparisons to specifications for later reference, verifying quality is much easier compared to methods used before CMM solutions became popular. Listed below are a few of the benefits our customers have experienced thanks to our quality assurance programs and post-machining coordinate measuring services.

Improved Efficiency

With our in-house inspection system, we can produce components and parts with dimensional accuracy at a much faster pace. The CMM helps minimize downtime and can integrate seamlessly into the production process, which enhances efficiency.

Reduced Waste

Our quality assurance protocols help us achieve precise dimensional accuracy the first time around, so it reduces the production of waste and decreases potential errors. Reducing waste also reduces production costs, and those savings are passed on to our customers.

Ensuring Compliance with CMM Quality Inspection

Many industries we work in, such as the aerospace and defense industries, require tight tolerances and strict regulatory compliance with all machined components. By implementing these state-of-the-art quality assurance measures, we can maintain compliance with quality and safety standards such as AS9100 and other certifications with greater ease and reliability.

Application Flexibility

By having our own CMMs, we can craft a multitude of different machined components based on unique dimensional specifications all with a focus on quality and precision. Accuracy only ever serves as a benefit, so this allows our machine shop to serve a wide range of different industries including aerospace, defense, automotive, electronics, and more.
